Running In A Straight Line

I have thought lots about how running is so much like life and how if one understands running, one might better understand life. Today, sometime between miles 10 and 12, I realized that there are times when I run that, while having every intention to run in a straight line, I fail to do so. This occurs only when I have reached my limit...when the run has become too much for me... that is when I do not run in a straight line like I want to.

It is a rare occurrence. When I find myself not running in a straight path, I am unaware of that fact until I bump into another person on the path, or until my foot falls over onto the shoulder. It is not intentional on my part to not run a straight path. It just happens.

Today it was 93 degrees when I concluded my 12 miles. I cannot seem to avoid the heat despite my best intentions. I ran a straight line for 10 miles, and I deviated for the last 2 miles.

And so it is that even the best-intentioned and most disciplined runner can end up not running straight when the run has become too much to endure.
